Abbott Park

Abbott Park is a Mecklenburg County neighborhood park at 1300 Spruce Street, in Wilmore. The county’s parks ordinance is the document that governs dogs here, and Section 26 runs one sentence: “It shall be unlawful to have pets in the areas of County parks where pets are expressly prohibited.” Dogs are allowed by default. A posted sign is the only thing that narrows that, and the county retired its per-park pages in the parkandrec.mecknc.gov redesign, so nothing specific to Abbott appears online either way.

Leash rules for the park aren’t published. County animal ordinance Sec. 3-71 requires physical restraint anywhere off your own property, which makes it the operative rule on the grounds. Water is the same story. No fountain is mapped inside the property, and nothing published mentions one.

I-77 runs a few hundred yards west. Freeway noise carries across the park, and it doesn’t let up.

The built parts sit close together: two tennis courts, a paved basketball court with two hoops, an open multi-purpose field, a picnic shelter, and playground equipment in two sections, linked by concrete walks. Spruce Street runs along one edge and Merriman Avenue along another. Parking is on-street.

A stream crosses the property and drops into a culvert partway through. Section 11 of the parks ordinance covers that water directly: no bathing dogs “in the streams, lakes, or other water features of any park.”

The county’s own park record leaves the size field blank, so there is no official acreage. Directories give it as 5.76 acres and as 8.5. The closing time is posted at the park and published nowhere online, and (980) 314-1002, the number in the county record, rings the Central Region parks office rather than anything on site.

Wilmore Park sits about half a mile up the same street, at 900 Spruce. Clanton Park is roughly a mile southwest, across the freeway.
