Canteen is a bar and lounge in the Boileryard at Camp North End, in the Raceway Building at 1824 Statesville Avenue. The dog rule that governs it isn’t Canteen’s. It belongs to the campus. Camp North End’s FAQ reads: “Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome in most outdoor areas (except for the ford green turf) and even some indoor businesses. Each businesses pet policy varies.” A second campus FAQ page says it shorter, and adds “Please keep your furry friends on a leash and clean up after them.”

That settles the outdoors and leaves the bar itself open. Canteen publishes no pet policy on its own site, and the tenant page Camp North End maintains for it doesn’t add one. Indoors, and on Canteen’s elevated porch, the campus wording hands the decision back to the business, and the business hasn’t put it in writing. The Ford Green turf is the one named exclusion on campus; the areas surrounding it are open.

Camp North End’s outdoor areas are open to the public 24/7, year-round, so the Boileryard stays walkable long after Canteen closes. The campus points visitors toward Boileryard outdoor seating for the sunset view of the water tower, which is visible from the parking lots. Parking is free at the 1724 Statesville Avenue surface lot and the one at 1801 North Graham; the garage on Razades Way runs free for three hours, then $4 an hour.

The drink list is sangria, local beer, wine, snacks, non-alcoholic options, and a wine-based cocktail called the NodaColada. The room is closed Monday and Tuesday, which is when it goes out for private events. Otherwise it opens at noon Wednesday through Friday and 11 a.m. on weekends, closing at 8 p.m. Sunday, 9 p.m. midweek, 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Sangria Sundays run all day, trivia is Thursdays 7 to 9, and Camp North End books its own live music in the Boileryard next door.

NoDa Brewing’s North End taproom is a bit over a mile east on North Tryon.
