Cherry Park

Cherry Park sits in the middle of the Cherry neighborhood, southeast of Uptown, between Baxter Street and South Torrence Street. Mecklenburg County owns it. There is no per-park page to read: the county’s redesigned Park and Recreation site dropped them, and the older mecknc.gov address that still surfaces in search results returns a 404.

So the dog rule comes from the ordinance. Section 26 of the county’s Parks and Recreation Facilities Ordinance reads: “It shall be unlawful to have pets in the areas of County parks where pets are expressly prohibited.” That’s a posted-areas prohibition rather than a blanket one. Dogs are allowed unless a sign at a particular spot says they aren’t, and signs like that tend to go up around ballfields and playgrounds.

Leashes are a separate question, and the parks ordinance is silent on them. The rule that does reach this park is the county Animal Ordinance, Sec. 3-71: physical restraint anywhere off your own property.

The park reopened in July 2025 after a rebuild. The county’s announcement lists what changed — “new paths, a renovated baseball field, a renovated full basketball court, a new playground with swings, a new shelter, and fresh plantings.” The work was done with the Charlotte Department of Transportation, which added new roadway crossings at the edges. Those crossings are the fastest thing to confirm on arrival: fresh paint on residential asphalt at the park line.

Fresh plantings are young plantings. The shelter is the only shade structure the county names.

The number above, (980) 314-1002, rings the Central Region park office. It isn’t a phone at the park, and nobody there is watching the field.

Little Sugar Creek Greenway runs less than half a mile west, on the far side of Kings Drive.
