The Ivey's Hotel

The dog rule here is published and specific. One pet per guestroom, fifty pounds or under, and a non-refundable $150 fee plus tax that covers a stay of up to two nights. Night three and every night after adds $50 plus tax. The terms also require that pets be registered at arrival, and note that “additional fees may be charged for damages.”

What the terms don’t cover is where a dog can go once it leaves the room. Nothing in writing addresses the lobby, the elevators, The Library, or Sophia’s Lounge, and neither of the two dining pages mentions dogs. No breed limits are published. No leash rule either, so Mecklenburg County’s animal ordinance (Sec. 3-71) is the operative one on the sidewalk out front: physical restraint anywhere off your own property. Water bowls go unmentioned one way or the other.

Forty-seven rooms in what opened in 1924 as the Ivey’s department store, on North Tryon between Fifth and Trade, directly across from the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. Sophia’s Lounge runs off a glass-enclosed staircase in the lobby, which is the first thing visible through the Tryon Street doors.

The rest of the published policy set matters for a dog in the room. Parking is “Valet only. Operated and billed by a third-party provider with dynamic market-based pricing up to $65 per vehicle, per night,” so there’s no self-park to duck out to. Check-in is 4 p.m., checkout 11 a.m., with a half-day rate up to 2 p.m. and a full night after that. A $250-per-night incidental hold goes on a card at check-in. The building is non-smoking, with a minimum $350 cleaning fee for violations indoors or on balconies. Check-in requires someone 21 or older.

Outside, it’s dense uptown block: no yard, no green strip on Tryon. Romare Bearden Park is roughly half a mile southwest, and CityVet Charlotte Uptown is in the same quadrant of the center city.
