Carnelian West Beach

Carnelian West is a California Tahoe Conservancy beach in Carnelian Bay, about six miles east of Tahoe City on Highway 28. Leashed dogs are welcome, in the Conservancy’s own words, with mutt mitts stocked on site.

Some regional roundups describe this stretch as a place dogs run free. The official listing says otherwise, and Carnelian Bay is unincorporated Placer County, where county code makes it unlawful to let an animal run at large off the owner’s premises. The fenced TCPUD dog park on Grove Street back in Tahoe City is the designated off-leash ground in the area.

What’s here is 530 linear feet of public shoreline on the west side of the Sierra Boat Company. The beach is small, flat stones rather than sand, wide and open, with a lakefront promenade running its length. Benches, picnic tables, and barbecues sit along it; charcoal isn’t provided. Public restrooms too.

Parking is free, in the lot shared with Gar Woods Grill and Pier. The restaurant maintains the site’s public amenities on the Conservancy’s behalf, which is why a state beach and a private restaurant share one driveway. Four spaces are marked accessible, most spaces sit within five hundred feet of the beach, and paver-stone ramps and pathways connect the lot to the bathrooms. That’s a shorter and flatter walk from car to water than most north shore access points.

The pier belongs to Gar Woods, which also runs day-use mooring buoys off the beach. There’s no boat launch here. The Conservancy’s car-top launch is at its other Carnelian Bay site, Lake Access East, a few minutes further along the highway.

The listing doesn’t give hours, and it doesn’t mention water bowls one way or the other. It does carry a link to California’s water-quality map, which is where shoreline advisories for this beach get posted.
