Kings Beach State Recreation Area

Dogs are not allowed on the sand at Kings Beach. California State Parks, which took over operating the recreation area in 2014, puts it plainly under a heading marked DOGS: “Dogs are not allowed on the beach at Kings Beach SRA year round.” The department’s FAQ for the site gives both the authority and the boundary: “Per State Parks regulations and Placer County Ordinances currently posted, dogs are not allowed on the beach. Dogs are allowed within the park (e.g., sidewalks, parking lot, playground), unless posted, but must be on a leash at all times.”

So the park takes a leashed dog and the beach doesn’t. Sidewalks, picnic tables, playground, lot. State Parks publishes no map of where the sand legally begins, and that “unless posted” clause means signage on the ground can narrow it further.

One exception, at the east end. The same DOGS section reads: “They are also welcome east of the Kings Beach boat ramp.” Elsewhere the page calls that stretch “Dog Beach which is located at the east of the Park beyond the boat ramp (rocky area).” It’s reached from Coon Street, where the boat launch and the picnic area share one large lot. Rock, not sand, by the agency’s own description. Whether the leash requirement carries across that line isn’t published anywhere official; third-party directories describe the spot as off-leash under voice control, and State Parks doesn’t.

Day use runs $10 per vehicle or $3 an hour. No camping: the recreation area is a day-use facility, and the lot stays open through the winter rather than closing for the season. The park sits in downtown Kings Beach near Bear Street, fronting North Lake Boulevard.

About eight miles east of Tahoe City on Highway 28. Carnelian West Beach, roughly three miles back toward town, allows leashed dogs on the shore itself.
