Tahoe XC (Tahoe Cross Country Ski Area)

From November through May, the state park ski trails behind Tahoe City ban dogs. Tahoe XC doesn’t. The community-owned cross-country area grooms eight kilometers of dog-friendly trail, marked on the trail map with a paw icon, and its FAQ says so plainly: “Yes, bring the family dog!”

Dogs are permitted on those dog-specific trails only. The rest of the roughly sixty-kilometer network is dog-free, which keeps the peace with the skate skiers. Leashes are required in the parking lot and at the trailhead; out on the trails the standard is close control and strict voice command. Poop bags and cans wait at the trailhead. Aggressive or unruly dogs are asked to stay home, and skijoring isn’t allowed anywhere on the network.

A dog skis on its own ticket here. Tahoe XC sells dog day tickets and dog season passes (“Many dogs get their own season pass!” is theirs too), though prices weren’t published at verification time. Ski and snowshoe rentals live in the day lodge, where only certified service dogs are allowed inside. The Free Heel Cafe handles the hot drink afterward.

The trailhead sits in a residential neighborhood at 925 Country Club Blvd, with limited parking and a 25 mph plea from the neighbors. The area itself recommends the TART Connect on-demand shuttle from town. In summer and fall the same trails open free to hikers and bikers; the paw-icon system and the groomed corduroy are winter operations.
